In the heart of every man is a desperate desire for a battle to fight, an adventure to live, and a beauty to rescue. –John Eldredge

In his New York Times bestselling book, Wild at Heart, John Eldredge invites his readers to explore the uncharted waters of the male heart. What makes men the way they are? Why can they be so emotionally distant? What are the deepest longings in the heart of a man? Eldredge explains that there are three desires that all men hold in common. All men want:

A battle to fight, an adventure to live, and a beauty to rescue.

Have you noticed how men flock to theaters to see the newest Marvel movie or the next hot action film? Ever wondered why? We love them, but it’s not because of some boyish fantasy. Men go to the theater to see those films for an emotional reason. We have to go. We have to go because in the deepest parts of our being, every man is asking himself the very same question.

Am I powerful? Do I have what it takes?

Eldredge says this is where most men take a wrong turn. When we don’t have a tall building to leap or a deadly villain to fight, we often turn to a woman to answer that question. In the absence of a Joker or Two-Face or Scarecrow to test and prove our manhood, we fall back on the woman, the relationship, the sex, and we hope she's the one who can finally tell us we are a man. Of course, she never does. She can’t.

“So many men make the mistake of thinking that the woman is the adventure,” says Eldredge. “But that is where the relationship immediately goes downhill. A woman doesn’t want to be the adventure; she wants to be caught up in something greater than herself.”

The reality is, most men carry a deep wound with them. That wound is simple. Very few of us had somebody around to affirm our manhood when we were growing up. We didn't have someone to answer our question - to tell us once and for all that we had what it takes. It’s a desire we desperately crave, and as Eldredge explains, it’s a desire that God is longing to meet. God wants to father us, guide us, heal us. But at the end of the day, it's only by allowing your heart to come alive again that He can be given access to do His work.

If you’re a guy or if you want to learn more about one, you need to pick up this book. We all have our questions, but you don't need to let yours go unaddressed any longer.

He's dying to answer it for you.
