007 | The Power of a Praying Husband/Wife by Stormie Omartian

Updated: Jun 16

Are you stuck in a prayer rut? Do you find yourself saying the same things over and over again? Are you in the dark about what your spouse needs you to pray for?

Stormie Omartian has you covered.

In her bestselling books The Power of a Praying Husband and The Power of a Praying Wife, Stomie Omartian takes couples on a step-by-step journey to learning how to pray for their spouse. According to Omartian, prayer isn’t always our first instinct to resolving an issue. It certainly wasn’t for her.

“During the first 14 of the 40 years Michael and I have been married, we experienced great strife and misery because we tried to do things in the flesh and not in the spirit,” she says.

As Christians, we know we are supposed to pray, but who among us would volunteer for public speaking if we constantly fumbled over our words? Who would want to pick up a bat if all we ever did was strike out? That’s no fun. When it comes to prayer it's no different. Like anything, if we want our efforts to be effective and enjoyable, we need someone to teach us how. We need someone to show us the way.

Enter Stormie.

“In my survey of wives,” she says, “85 percent of them said the most important prayer their husband could pray was that he would become the man, husband, and head of the home God wanted him to be. This is the most important place for a man to begin praying.”

The problem is, most of the time men don’t begin there. Some men don’t begin at all. Going deep in prayer can seem a little touchy feely for men, and as a whole, guys don’t exactly love expressing emotion. Prayer can be vulnerable. Men don’t do vulnerable. But if we want to become the man God wants us to be, we have to learn to go there. If you want your husband to be the man God made him to be, then he has to learn to go there.

“A man’s communication with his wife is dependent upon his communication with the Father,” says Stormie’s husband, Michael.

I’m not married, so I don’t have a wife at home to pray for, but as strange as this may sound, I actually picked up a copy of The Power of a Praying Wife to help me pray for myself. In typical male fashion, I had always stuck with the basics – money, safety, deliverance from lust, marriage - but beyond that there wasn’t much else on the docket when it came to my prayer life. Once I cracked open this book, it was amazing to me how many aspects of my life I had never addressed in prayer.

My faith? My reputation? My trials? My past? Stormie addressed a number of things that mattered to me greatly, and yet, I had never thought to pray about those things. Not once. Maybe it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that this brute needed a woman’s insight for his eyes to be opened, but it proves a point nonetheless. We don’t know what we don’t know, and with something as important as prayer, maybe Stormie Omartian can finally show you the things you've been missing.

Who knows, your marriage might just depend on it.
