010 | God, Where are You?! by John Bevere

Updated: Jul 6, 2020

How would you describe your current situation? Be honest. How are you? Does it feel like God is nowhere to be found? Are you searching for answers? Begging for change? Maybe God promised you something and now it feels farther away than ever. Maybe you’ve suffered a setback and God isn’t saying a word about it. Sound familiar? Then you, my friend, are in the wilderness.

In God, Where are You?!, bestselling author John Bevere takes us into the purpose of suffering, offers encouragement in our dry spells, and shows us the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.

“The wilderness is not God’s rejection but His place of preparation,” says Bevere. “Our attitude toward the wilderness should be to see it as a great opportunity to build spiritual muscle, to get stronger for what the Lord wants to give us next.”

That sounds pretty good, right? Mission minded. Go, go, go. God has a plan and He's gonna use me to do great things! We fall in love with the destination, but we’re less than enthused about the journey itself. Some of us avoid it altogether, and it's easy to see why…

The wilderness is hard.

Really hard.

The wilderness is harder than anything we could ever imagine, because at the end of the day, that's its exact purpose - to test us, try us, break us. It has to. If it didn't, it wouldn’t be much of a wilderness in the first place.

“When God brings us into the wilderness,” says Bevere, “it will be to test us, to see if we will hunger for Him or if we will hunger for the comforts and pleasures that have eluded us.”

“The wilderness is not a time for seeking signs, blessings, abundance, or wonders," he continues, "but a time to seek the heart of God.”

Does that seem like a prize worth chasing - the heart of God - or does that just sound like a Sunday school answer to you? That statement begs the question: How do you seek God if you can’t feel Him?

And there lies the point of the wilderness. God brings us to a place where He is nowhere to be found, nowhere to be felt, and then allows us to make our own decision. Will we go looking for Him, or will we instead choose the comforts of this world? He wants to reveal Himself to us, He wants us to feel Him, but the only classroom He can teach us that lesson is the wilderness.

If you're in the thick of it and can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, this book is the guide you've been looking for.

We will all face suffering in this life, but as John Bevere lays out in God, Where are You?!, maybe our suffering isn't the end of the world. Maybe it's the beginning of the greatest blessing imaginable.
