003 | Clean Gut by Alejandro Junger, M.D.

Updated: Jun 16, 2020

If your dog was sick, tired, and lethargic for weeks on end, what is the first question the vet would ask you when you walked into their clinic? It’s pretty obvious, isn’t it?

What have you been feeding her?

While it’s intuitive for us to look at the wrong dog chow as the reason for our pets’ illnesses, we don’t seem to make the same leap for humans.

In his New York Times bestselling book, Clean Gut, Dr. Alejandro Junger tells his personal story of transformation. Gut dysfunction robbed him of joy for many years, and in fact, it nearly took his life. When western medicine failed, Junger stumbled upon a gut detox program, and that was the program that shifted his thinking - and his life - forever.

“Food is medicine, and the gut is the key to a long, vibrant life,” Junger explains. “The gut is the center of health, illness, and dysfunction. If you want to figure out why your leaves are turning brown, so to speak, look at your gut.”

Based off of his own experience and compelling scientific research, Junger explains that gut dysfunction is the main culprit to a host of chronic diseases and ailments, including autoimmune disorders, cancer, depression, allergies, infertility, gluten sensitivity, and even back pain.

In Clean Gut, Junger lays out his Four R’s of gut repair: Remove, Replace, Reinoculate, and Repair.

He says we first must Remove anything from our diet that prevents optimal gut function. Then, we must Replace the nutrients that our body is lacking due to our traditional western diets. Third, we must Reinoculate the gut with probiotics – healthy gut bacteria – to build a colony of living gut flora that our body is supposed to have. Finally, we must Repair our gut through periodic fasting, because our gut can’t heal itself if it’s busy digesting that McDouble we just threw down.

In the words of Dr. Junger, we are not what we eat, we are what we absorb. As long as you eat food, then you want to read this book. You'll find some things worth absorbing.
